After announcing that she would play for Lakehead University back in July, Darnellia Russell has decided to return home to Seattle and not play basketball in Canada this season.

It will be interesting to see if she ends up finding somewhere else to play basketball and continue pursuing her WNBA dream.

Russell Returns Home Due to Family Comittments

Lakehead Thunderwolves Women’s Basketball Head Coach Jon Kreiner regrets to announce that recruit Darnellia Russell has decided to return home to Seattle and not play for the Thunderwolves this season.

Kreiner said Russell wanted to return home as she found being separated from her two daughters was much more difficult than she had anticipated.

Russell said it was not an easy decision. “I am really sorry for letting everyone down. I knew it was going to be very difficult leaving my kids but this was way more difficult then I can put into words. I want to thank everyone who worked so hard to get me to Thunder Bay; the Lakehead University Athletics Department, coaching staff, players, friends in Seattle, my Seattle coach and all the media who have been so kind to me. This was a tremendous opportunity for me and my decision to leave had nothing to do with the coaching staff or players. I miss my kids and need to be with them.”

Coach Kreiner said he was disappointed but was sympathetic to Russell’s choice. “Darnellia’s decision to go back home is an understandable one but also a disappointing one. I had hoped that she would take a little more time to give it more of a chance but we are very happy to have provided her the best opportunity and situation we could for her to achieve her degree while playing at Lakehead University. Darnellia has brought great international media attention to our program and I am honoured that she decided to play for us.”

Lakehead Athletics Director Tom Warden said he understood Darnellia’s decision. “I understand about commitment to family and we’re very sorry it didn’t work out for her here at Lakehead. We wish her the best of luck in the future.”

Transition Points:

Russell alluded to missing home only a few days before the announcement was made in an article in the Chronicle Journal.
How often do you think of them?
“All the time, 24/7,” Russell says. “I want to go home to them but I know I‘ve got to do this for us: Me and my kids.”
Russell‘s in Thunder Bay pursuing a dream. She‘s here to get a university degree so she can play professionally in the WNBA.

Some college or wealthy person needs to step and help this girl live up to her potential. If we can bail out all those rich scum bags on wall street why can't we help girls like this

Darnellia Russell was an excellent high school basketball player, but it is obvious that she is not even close to WNBA-level in terms of talent. She did not make a big mark at the junior college level. There are more than a thousand American colleges and universities that offer full scholarships to women basketball players, yet she has not received one, much less a scholarship at an elite Division 1 program. Her 15 minutes of fame are over with, but at lest she has a nice movie to look back on to commemorate her high school career.

Dick.... You definately live up to your name. I'm totally baffled at your comment about Darnelia. Not only do you not know what she is going through, but who the hell are YOU to make such a comment. The reason she did not have many scholarship offers is pretty much OBVIOUS, and also ridiculous... she has a family and children, and that is her number ONE priority. This would have been a VERY very hard decision to make and she made it putting her children first. At least she made the fight to do what she did and accomplished a HUGE accomplishment.. this documentary hit "very" close to home and I can TOTALLY and completely understand what she went through and why she made the decision that she made. So please, don't make remarks like the one you just made about something you could NOT possibly understand.
THANKS DICK!

Yes MR.DICK Darnellia was an excellent high school basketball player, was an excellent junior college ball player and yes ,she had records and accolades under her belt on that level also, and guess what ,you have not heard the last from Darnellia. This child has gifts and talents you couldn't imagine and to add to that she is called to be a leader and when she decides to walk in her gift people like you can only sit back and take notice. GLADE YOU ENJOYED THE MOVIE. STAY TUNED!! DARNELLIA'S MOM APRIL S.
April S, where is Darnelia? Just wondering if she ended up somewhere. Good luck
The question is why would she lay down and get pregnant again. I am tired of hearing about people using kids as a scapegoat.....Ladies pursue your damn dreams and then get pregnant. I bet that college lost alot of money tring to make it possible for her to get to Canada. Some women and men just don't know how to stop digging a whole for themselves.

The answer to your question , is none of your business ! She is a grown woman and can do as she please . I dont see you giving her not 1 dime to support her children or her education . Please tell me, How is she using her children as a " scapgoat " ? And about your bet .... that's incorrect as well ! Get a life ... live it ! And stop trying to place negative judgement on others. I hope you SHIT on yourself when you see her in the WNBA .
Yes, The heart of the game is something nice to look back on .... but at this point in her life she has something more to look FORWARD to and that is a full scholarship and the WNBA .

She is currently at the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky. You have to admire the young lady, she is defying all odds, and doing it her way. Not worried at all about what others think.
I would preferred to see the Movie company or the Producers of the movie helped this young lady. Having a family should not be a reason to put her down. Funny not one comment about how any of us could help her. Hey Sweetheart you hang inthere and follow your dream. As a Garfield Bulldog, Class of '69, it is hard for me to praise a "RoughRider" but in this case, You are a Star. Shine bright in life and keep God, your Family and your dreams close in your heart. Don't Quit......NEVER SURRENDER YOUR FAITH IN GOD OR YOURSELF! After High School I left to fight in Vietnam. I came back with so many problems. I struggled with what i was ordered to do there. But I called on my faith to sustain me. I was homeless and lost but I believed in God and the Lord Jesus, got me through all the pitfalls of life. Now i live in the Philippines. I am a retired Officer with the Los Angeles Airport Police. God looked out for me. I had tears when I saw your movie. Because you have been given this gift....respect it....honor God and he will give you the desires of your heart.

This young lady definitely has basketball talent. I think she should be given the chance to continue her career in the WNBA. Give her a chance, put her in the WNBA and if she can not prevail / it is like a job. Ask the "DONALD" you're fired, and if she does do well then no more to be said.
